Learn about history by spending time in jail

A building that once held prisoners now holds memories of the past at the Granville County History Museum. The Granville County jail in Oxford, built in 1860, was scheduled for demolition in 1970 before the Oxford Women’s Club saved it to use as a museum and meeting space. In 1996, the official Granville County History Museum opened in celebration of the county’s 250th anniversary. Today, the renovated museum takes visitors through Native American history in the area through recent historical events with artifacts, interactive exhibits, movies and oral histories. Spend an afternoon in jail just a short drive from Raleigh soaking in stories of the past.
